Description: The fade-out technique dates back to the early days of recording, when performers would move away from the recording horn or lower their volume to create the effect. With the advent of electrical recording, engineers could achieve smoother fade-outs using mixing desk faders.

By the 1930s, fade-outs were used to transition between sides of longer records and became especially popular during the Motown era, where fade-outs were used to end songs gently, as if continuing forever. (This effect is known as the "Pulse Continuity Phenomenon.")

A good fade takes more than a steadily turning a knob. It’s rumored some engineers were even hired for their skill in creating musical, seamless fade-outs.

Legendary mixing engineer Jeff Rothschild explains that for a musical fade, the volume must “go down a little quicker at first, and then it’s a longer fade.” And then silence. “That’s what sounds more natural to your ear.”

Motown Fades achieves this by employing an S-shaped curve. Motown Fades is a simple device to instantly add natural, musical fade-outs with a single click, perfect for production or live use.
