Description: This device is tap delay reimagined.

The device uses 4 independent delay lines to create a tap delay-type effect in a novel way. The tap delays are equally spaced in time, synced to tempo or by milliseconds. The 4 delays are controlled by a variable volume slope so they can sound like they are coming in, going out or all the same volume.

The tap delay tone can be shaped by the Hi Cut and Low Cut settings, and there is a distortion effect to add grit to the tap delays. You can set the device to produce 1, 2, 3, or 4 delays.

There is a "redelay" mode where the original signal is delayed so that it is heard after the series of tap delays. The redelayed sound is not affected by the tap delay volume, tone controls or distortion, it is meant to sound like it is dry.

The whole set of delays can be offset in time to place the effect in a different location in the bar. This is how the "reverse" effect is achieved.

This device is capable of a lot of interesting delay effects, including jarring slap-back effects, complex synchronized delays, and of course a "reverse" delay effect. Because there is no delay feedback, it keeps the sound very present. You get the effect of multiple repeats while avoiding the clutter trailing delays can produce.

The reverse tap delay is simulated by putting an increasing slope on the tap delays and enabling the "redelay". The redelay makes it sound like the tap delays are happening before and leading in to the original signal. (You can use the mix control to remove the undelayed original signal if you want) Using the "offset" control then places the delay effect in a different position in the bar.

For example, if the effect is placed on a snare sound that happens on the 3, the offset can be set so that the redelayed signal is again on the 3, but the tap delays happen before it. A quick way to hear the effect is to feed it with a single drum sound, like a snare, turn on "redelay", then set the taps to 4, tap sync time to 16n, and the offset to "sync" and 11. Now, the snare will be on the same beat, but delayed by one bar. The tap delays happen before the snare hit.

The math for finding the offset is first to calculate how long the effect takes: # of taps plus 1 for the redelay times the tap delay. Then, you add enough time to get the redelay to play on the correct beat. In the example above, it was 4 16ths for the taps, 1 16th for the redelay = 5 16ths. 16 (number of 16ths in a bar) - 5 = 11, and that is the number of 16ths to use for the offset to get the redelayed original signal to land on the same beat of the next bar.

You can also do this by ear, of course: set up your tap effect, then tweak the offset until it finds its place in the rhythm.

The spacing of the tap delays can be rhythmic or set very fast to get (for example) a ratchet effect that happens before the sound that generated the delays.

i'm trying to check out your device but it doesn't show the tap time and the tap slope controls and when i open it in max for live the console shows the following error messages: https://i.imgur.com/eZ33xC9.png

the device does seem to be missing some key controls one my end as well
OK, thanks for the report. Looks like one of the patcher files didn't make it in to the final. I will upload an update tonight.
