Device Overview

Name/Version: Grain Convolvor 1.1
Author: opticon93
Description: Hi Folks,

This is a Spectral Convolver audio effect. It performs Cross Synthesis of two audio signals. The first signal is the Input audio and the second is from a granularized Sample. It convolves the first signal with the Spectral Amplitude of the second, or (if the double arrow button is pressed) it convolves the Spectral Amplitude of the first signal with the audio of the second. These are different.

The Sample has the same controls as my Grainery devices which are based off of Brendan McCloskey's incredible Granary Max Project found here:

https://cycling74.com/projects/granary-a-hybrid-granulation-engine

In particular, you can independently Time Stretch, Pitch Shift and Scrub the Sample as well as other Grain controls.

I had to add a bypassable Limiter on the output because it can get extremely loud and also because it sometimes can be too quiet. It really depends on the Input material and the Sample. If it is too quiet, you can raise the Output level on the Limiter.

Have fun.

Update: I fixed the strange parameter names. Its always something.

very useful thank you, nice easy way to layer say a pad and rhythmic loop, will continue experimenting.

Thank you, I'm glad you like it. I'll give that a try. I've mostly been using it to breathe new life into my boring old hardware synths. It definitely encourages a bit of experimentation.

Very unique granular tool! Never seen anything like it, combining like this granular and spectral convolution. Love it! Definitely a special tool for experimental sounds, textures and other weird noises. Thanks for sharing it.

Thank you! Don't forget to try out the FM Convolvor also. It can get pretty strange as well. It might be pretty weird to have one following the other.

I can't stress enough how fantastic and crazy this device is!! Seriously, it's a monster experimental tool. I love it since I first downloaded it.

@opticon93: anything strange and unique like this coming soon? Love your devices! :)

Thank You!

My current dreams involve a wave terrain synthesizer (not using 2d.wave) with assignable/generative landscapes and really controllable, multi-parameter trajectories.

I've got some of it working with a landscape and controllable trajectories, but switching landscapes causes problems with the trajectories, I think.

I'm pretty sure that I also have a better (earlier and better) version of my knob twiddler coming out soon.

Exiting!! Looking forward to it. If you need a helper on trying things, testing, etc. Let me know! :)

Really nice! Any chance that this could work on input from another track instead of the sample requirement? Would be really cool to combine with a microphone input for weird spectral vocoder sort of stuff :)

Not sure I understand. Convolution requires two audio sources, one of which is the granulizer. The other source can certainly be a mic input.

I guess their could be a version that simply convolves to arbitrary inputs, but I don't think I can granularize live input.
